We also launched that beautiful, consistent and simpler design on our home page, Gmail and calendar with many more products soon to come.  Greater focus has also been another big feature for me this quarter--more wood behind fewer arrows  Last month, for example, we announced that we will be closing Google Health and Google PowerMeter  We’ve also done substantial internal work simplifying and streamlining our product lines  While much of that work has not yet become visible externally, I am very happy with our progress here  .

Photo

Focus and prioritization are crucial given our amazing opportunities   Indeed I see more opportunities for Google today than ever before  Because believe it or not we are still in the very early stages of what we want to do  Even in search … which we’ve been working on for 12 years there have never been more important changes to make .

For example this quarter we launched a pilot that shows an author’s name and picture in the search results, making it easier for users to find things from authors they trust.  Of course when we started doing search, people thought we were crazy--they said there was no money to be made in search over and above a bit of banner advertising  .

Most new internet businesses have had the same criticism  Fast forward to today--it feels like we are watching the same movie again in slow motion  We have tremendous new businesses being viewed as “crazy”  Android  We actually have a new metric to report of 550,000 Android Devices activated a day!  That’s a HUGE number even by Google’s standards  Chrome It’s the fastest growing browser With over 160 million users  .

People rightly ask how we will monetize these businesses?  And of course I understand the need to balance the short term with the longer term needs because our revenues and growth serve as the engine that funds our innovation  But our emerging high usage products can generate huge new businesses for Google in the long run, just like search And we have tons of experience monetizing successful products over time  Well run technology businesses with tremendous consumer usage make a lot of money over the long term  I think about our products in three separate categories .

First, there is search and our ads products, the core driver of revenue for the company. Nikesh and Susan are going to talk more about ads later in the call  Next, we have products that are enjoying high consumer success--YouTube, Android and Chrome. We are investing in these in order to optimize their long-term success  Then we have our new products--Google+ and Commerce and Local. We are are investing in them to drive innovation and adoption .

Overall, we are focused on long term absolute profit and growth, as we have always been--and I will continue the tight financial management we have had in the last two years, even as we are making significant investments in our future  I would like to finish on our people  Great companies are no greater than the efforts and ingenuity of their people  So continuing to hire the best, keeping them happy and well rewarded is crucial to our future  Many of you will be interested in hiring--whether we hired a few hundred more or less than you expected this quarter. But we will optimize headcount for the long term and the opportunities we see .

So I’m happy with the investments we’ve made in people, though we’re probably even a little ahead of where we need to be with headcount growth at the edge of what is manageable now  It is easy to focus on things we do that are speculative (e.g., driverless cars) but we spend the vast majority of our resources on the core products. We may have a few small speculative projects happening at any given time, but we’re very careful stewards of shareholder money -- we’re not betting the farm on this stuff.  All of us at Google want to create services that people across the world use twice a day … just like a toothbrush!  And we strive to make those services beautiful, simple and easy to use.

That way we can provide huge benefit to the world  We have made a good start but we are at only 1 per cent of what’s possible … Google is just getting started … and that is why I am here--working hard to lead this company to the next level Thank You. And again, we had a great quarter. Doing better with inclusion in the "indie" community? Yes, for sure. But there's got to be ways to deal with toxic behavior, too - especially when that toxic behavior is disproportionately directed at people who are also being marginalized by the indie community.  Basically, I wish this post did not come off to me as Mark nobly sacrificing the well-being and safety of others so he can look like a hero.  (Hell, I'm scared to write even this mildly critical post, as I've had credible death threats this year. But fuck it.) Jul 26, 2016 Avonelle Wing (Avie)'s profile photo Avonelle Wing (Avie) +88 I'm concerned about all the voices that have serious issues with how they've been treated in the past who have now been silenced entirely because one person (one white man)  behaved inappropriately in public in the perception of one high-visibility entity.  When somebody who is high-profile says "can't we all be friends?!?" the chant picks up and those who say "no. I've been damaged by this" get taken apart, shut down, shut out.   I'm not sure this was the way to mend fences, if that's the goal.   I've never stepped into this particular fray because I step out of the internet when it gets to punching and ugliness, but people I care about have been targeted, so I've been watching.   Fear of retaliation is gatekeeping, and there's definitely gatekeeping going on that is keeping women out of publicly producing games.   If the goal is to invite everybody to the party, I don't think we're getting there today. Or tomorrow. Or at Gen Con this year - because now, all those voices who live in active fear, who moderate their online presence to avoid being targeted - are aware that their stories have no value in this conversation. Jul 26, 2016 Avonelle Wing (Avie)'s profile photo Avonelle Wing (Avie) +61 I have a serious what-comes-next question.  If those folks who feel they have legitimate reason to be terrified right now were to speak up, how is the community prepared to support them and to decry, shut down, shame, etc, etc, etc the harassment they've faced so THEIR wounds can heal?   What are we actually doing to actively support people who are NOT in intersections of privilege and power who feel victimized and now, also, silenced and shamed into complicity in their own hurt? I believe this was poorly thought through. Jul 26, 2016 Sage LaTorra's profile photo Sage LaTorra +18 I can't speak for Mark, but what I took away from it was about hatred, not about safety. We can (and should) make spaces that exclude people whom are dangerous to what that space should be, or to the people in it, for whatever reason.  The thing that I see Mark pointing out is when that crosses from safety in to hatred, where these people become the boogeyman and normal standards of behavior to them no longer apply.  I may be wrong about those things, as I'm neck-deep in privalege and so can say this already. Jul 26, 2016 Mikael Andersson's profile photo Mikael Andersson +49 You have some good points and this is definitely food for thought, but I'm not convinced, Mark. On the one hand you're equating Z.S. & his close friends and associates with the "OSR community" in order to indict the "story gaming community" for attempting to paint the whole OSR as a Goldstein hate figure, but on the other hand you're saying the post isn't about Z.S. but rather about how the story games community engages with the OSR community. Which is it? Because at least 4 of your 6 bullet-pointed crimes came as a direct result of engagements with Z.S., and I know first-hand there's a substantial degree of cross-over affiliations in those two amorphous "communities", both relationship- and design-wise, that contradict the notion of a Goldstein figure.  From where I'm standing most of your concerns seem to boil down to people having angry reactions to abusive behaviour. And sure, we can both act more loving-than-thou and suggest that anger doesn't lead to reconciliation and one catches flies better with honey than vinegar etc, but it's not as if this has not been attempted, time and time and time again. I'm not saying Rob's outburst was called-for, productive, or even funny. I'm not saying walking out of the ENnies was an infallible show of solidarity with no repercussions and no innocent victims. I'm not saying accusations of brain damage for enjoying a certain playstyle is what anyone should be associating themselves with. But the implied assertion that if we'd all just be cool in the face of abuse and not respond in-kind we'd all turn into one big happy family united in equality and social justice is just not factual.  For one, if we disregard Z.S. and his prima facie progressive circles, most of the active online OSR community I've personally encountered has been found rubbing shoulders with GamerGate, white supremacists, and other neoreactionary groups decrying "political correctness" and "cultural Marxism" - read: The Escapist, theRPGsite, Varg Vikernes' core audience, etc. I can of course not say that is the majority of OSR fans nor that there's something in the games themselves that attract this type of person (though the latter seems intuitively true to me, in the sense that if a fascist wanted to play an RPG they'd be unlikely to gravitate towards, say, Emily Care Boss' romance trilogy, and more likely to gravitate towards a game that let them imagine being a badass white warrior killing people who didn't look like them to amass profit and glory). All I can say for sure is that by my own experience I have seen a far greater concentration of the kind of person I wouldn't want at my table in the OSR community than in other RPG communities - by which I mean, people who target and victimize and make other players have a shit time. Why this is is hard to determine, and my gravitation theory above is insufficient, though I'm sure the cultural emphasis on free speech, "no politics" (in scare quotes), and a pre-existing concentration of noxious people play a part.  Meanwhile, I'm compelled to say, I also know a great many wonderful people in the OSR community, so whatever organic selection process transpires is obviously not creating homogeneity. Many of those lovely humans are probably reading your post and will want to agree with it, because they want healing to occur so they don't feel like their game preferences paint them in a bad light, and this post will seem to many to be the path to such healing. Inclusivity and turn-the-other-cheek and love-and-light are all great ideals and I agree absolutely the only way to heal rifts between people and communities, but this is only possible when both sides are willing to play ball. This has not been the case. Because the "sides" aren't really "story gamers vs OSR gamers", it's individuals, and the "side" you've been identifying as the OSR as in this piece has simply not been receptive.  I write this comment on a public post knowing full well that targeting will probably follow, as I (a nobody who is rarely otherwise targeted) have been targeted in this context for far less in the past. I'd suggest that people who might agree with me do not +1 this comment for your own safety. Jul 26, 2016 Sage LaTorra's profile photo Sage LaTorra +Bret Gillan was the post he shared the screencap from private? I didn't see the original post, so I can't be sure. Jul 26, 2016 Sage LaTorra's profile photo Sage LaTorra +1 +Bret Gillan found it by grep-ing "private". I was about to agree, yeah, summarizing a private thread crosses a line for me. But I'm actually not sure. If Mark had phrased it as "I've seen private threads dedicated to calling James Raggi creepy" I wouldn't have batted an eye.m So I'm not sure what my standard is on this, and I'll have to think more. Jul 26, 2016 Avonelle Wing (Avie)'s profile photo Avonelle Wing (Avie) +63 All I can comfortably say in public without permission is that my private feed is full of people who are legitimately terrified today.   Terrified that forces that have acted against them in the past have been given license to act with impunity and had their past sins publicly expunged in a "can't we all be friends" post that's getting a lot of visibility.   Somebody in a position of privilege and power has just been validated as "the wronged party" without any consideration to other aspects of the situation.   I'm currently working hard to support a very tender, scared, sore community and I need to know what support is out there from other quarters.   The response can't just be "yeah! Go Mark!"   What are we doing to support the people who are literally physically ill today because they live with the knowledge that any single day on the internet could bring them back into the crosshairs, and today, Mark brought them back to center stage?   How are we shutting down the death threats and social media mobilization that has happened in the past? Jul 26, 2016 Jessica Hammer's profile photo Jessica Hammer +57 +Sage LaTorra Mark is conflating verbal abuse (e.g. Rob's posts) with protest (e.g. walking out of the ENnies) with staying away from something (e.g. not getting involved with ConTessa). He also conflates people with opinions that may not be popular in the "indie" community (e.g. Stacy) with people who have both harassed others and incited harassment mobs (e.g. Zak). Because he's not being precise about these distinctions, the article reads as "if you don't support people with a history of abusive behavior, you are just as bad as if you are verbally abusive to someone you disagree with." Maybe that's not what he meant, but it's what he said, and I am pretty damn sure it's how the article is going to be used.  Jul 26, 2016 Olman Feelyus's profile photo Olman Feelyus +10 +Avonelle Wing There are people who feel scared and marginalized on both sides of this conflict.  There are people on both side of the conflict who have crossed the line.  Continuing to "decry, shut down, shame" will only create more victims.  On both sides.  I think what +Mark Diaz Truman is calling for is a reconciliation, an opening of dialogue so that we can effect real change in our culture.  That doesn't ignore or brush aside those who are suffering.  But we need to find a better way to address their pain then to hunt down and condemn the supposed aggressors.  Let's find common ground, work where we can work together and then start pushing out on the negative behaviours in a positive way.  We've been trying the fighty way for a long time now and while it has raised awareness, I'm not sure how much actual changed it has brought about. Jul 26, 2016 Brie “Beau” Sheldon's profile photo Brie “Beau” Sheldon Sub Jul 26, 2016 Sage LaTorra's profile photo Sage LaTorra +10 +Jessica Hammer I think that reading is pretty far from the text. He specifically talks about bridging communities but not defending Zak. Jul 26, 2016 Avonelle Wing (Avie)'s profile photo Avonelle Wing (Avie) +21 I actually don't care which "side" people who are suffering today are on, +Olman Feelyus.   I didn't indicate a "side", did I?   I run gaming conventions. Jul 26, 2016 Jessica Hammer's profile photo Jessica Hammer +16 +Sage LaTorra I think your reading is the one that's far from the text, but I'm not sure that there's any way we can resolve that difference. Jul 26, 2016 Brendan S's profile photo Brendan S +25 Brave post. Props.  I have some mixed feelings regarding the reification of community borders (the us/them language) especially since I feel like I have a presence to some degree in both sides (though keeping it real I am way more active in the OSR and am more of a lurker in the post-Forge).  I can't speak meaningfully to the race angle, but as an out gay guy who has published old school gaming materials and been relatively close to Zak for 5+ years, I have seen nothing but love and support for minority and LGBTQ issues from him, though his abrasive style is not mine. So the periodic flareup of "Zak is a transphobic homophobic misogynist" nonsense is particularly jarring. Jul 26, 2016 Jenn Martin's profile photo Jenn Martin . Jul 26, 2016 Brendan S's profile photo Brendan S +24 To +Mikael Andersson's point, it's probably worth noting that there are a lot of different subcommunities interested in old school play, with as many definitions even of what constitutes such play, and what I tend to shorthand as DIY D&D which includes Zak (concentrated on some blogs and G+) may have very little intersection with folks playing close to RAW AD&D and hanging out on dragonsfoot forums or the people that congregate on therpgsite. So grouping all these people together is probably a mistake. Jul 26, 2016 Elizabeth Chaipraditkul's profile photo Elizabeth Chaipraditkul +24 Thanks for posting this Mark! He's calling out everybody, even himself, and it sounds a lot like it's coming from a place of love.   No way of opening up this dialogue would have satisfied everybody, however he brought this up -- it would ultimately have come under fire by somebody here, as it has. I'm surprised to find some people here missing the point and just how incredibly moving this is. Take a moment to put aside the initial shock from the numerous names and references because you know these people and play these games to focus on where this comes from.  It sounds like Mark loves these games, loves these people and it's community, and what each community could be. This reads as coming from a place of love, from wanting "us" to rise up and be better and do better and be the people we want to be, all of the time and not just when it's convenient. If you're offended by this post, you need to separate it from your ego. Don't dig in, don't get defensive. Listen to what he's saying and where it comes from. Yes, there needs to be a next step, but there can also be a moment to appreciate this one. Allow yourself to be moved by this and take the intent for what it is. Jul 26, 2016 Michael McMullan's profile photo Michael McMullan +31 I think others have made some good points.  While I know that Mark tried to make it clear that it's not "about" Zak, I think one of the core issues that apparently Rob didn't want to or failed to explain in the exchange that got Mark thinking was this:   Zak tagged Rob (and others) into a post where he asked people to justify having +1'd a perfectly reasonable post by +Tony Lower-Basch. This is not the first time things like this have happened, and is part of the behavior people who have a problem with Zak run into alot; he keeps talking about them and will do things like demand they answer on his terms for something as simple as agreeing with someone he disagrees with.  Rob's response to this was to recognize that Zak wasn't going to engage in good faith anyway (something Zak and Tony both demonstrated in the exchanges that came later, as Tony was relentlessly patient & rational while Zak deleted & edited posts left-and-right) and simply create an interaction that was unpleasant for Zak in the hopes he'd find it unfulfilling and stop the behavior.   The point wasn't to insult Zak, because Zak doesn't care (Zak in fact went back to his blog and framed the entire situation as Rob coming after him for being up for some awards) as long as he feels like he "won."  Mark, I recognize that this doesn't change your main point or feelings on what Rob wrote at all, and I would not feel right taking Rob's approach myself... but I think that doing the rhetorical equivalent of "acting crazy"/snarling & snapping your teeth in a last-ditch attempt to discourage someone from engaging with you is far from a moral failing or unforgivable behavior. My hope is to spark a reconciliation with this post, a process that involves both protecting/supporting people (as +Avonelle Wing has called for in her posts) and addressing our own failings to treat others fairly or enact our own values. There isn't any one right way to lead us through these challenges, so I'm reading and listening here to learn how I can push us in the right direction.  In general, I think +Fraser Simons and +Sage LaTorra have been able to articulate my point most clearly: I love this community and I want to see us thrive. I want us to build safe spaces (like the IGDN or Metatopia or NewMexiCon) and I want us to enforce those boundaries. But I also want us to stop antagonizing another group of people who talk about us as the monsters that wait in the dark. We can do both; they aren't mutually exclusive.  This is about communities of people, not individual actors.  To +Bret Gillan's point about the private post, I've removed it. Whatever (IMO little) good he does is vastly outweighed by his being one of the most toxic online personalities this hobby has ever seen. While that may in no way justify any specific level of retribution against him, it does make it very difficult to just sing "Kumbaya" and move on.  It also has made it very difficult for me to tolerate a sector of our hobby that seems perfectly okay with his behavior, to the point of some even calling him "our greatest philosopher" (c. the Mule Abides blog). Add in the other behavior I've seen that commenters here have confirmed, and I find I need to cultivate my interactions with this sector very carefully.  So yeah, I can see Mark is trying. Jul 26, 2016 Andy Hauge's profile photo Andy Hauge +23 I think Jessica hits it on the head with "conflation". I think it's a mistake to lump Rob's interactions together with some very different things that spiralled out of this mess. I think there's definitely a time and a place to talk about bringing the hobby together, to talk about the clashes that different branches of the RPG community have at times, but standing behind the toxic actions of an individual are not that proper context.  I'm a bit of a lurker in the community. I try to gather as much information as I can and I don't say much. I know that both of the individuals you use as your lead-in and justification for the past (because as far as I can tell, the main purpose of the post is to justify why you're dropping involvement with Rob) can be abrasive at times. I also know that one of them has been known to be systematic with their verbal abuse and intimidation, and to single people out. There's a big difference between and some vented frustration and anger, even anger which hasn't been apologized for.  So that leaves me in the position of agreeing with solid portions of your original point (don't burn bridges, empathize with people who are at odds with us, show compassion), but at the same time I'm uncomfortable with the specific courses of action that the post reads as implying. There's really no way to shake the initial vibe of "people are being mean to Zak, so they're dividing the community".  I like a lot of work you've done. I've appreciated how you seek to achieve understanding surrounding complex issues, I loved the podcast interview you did about Cartel. I don't love the bit where you single out Rob because he lashed out in anger at an individual with a well-established and frankly troubling history. I saw that original thread. I wasn't a fan of Rob's response, but I could readily understand where it was coming from.  I'm disappointed in this post, because it reads to me as "we're dropping out of the Misspent Youth project with Rob because he lashed out at Zak and hasn't apologized, and this is actually emblematic of the drama in our community". It just...look, your business decisions are your own. But don't make this about community issues, because it isn't.  Or, rather, it is. How are all of us working to protect those people, who do not feel safe in engaging in this discussion?   I know that I need to do a much better job on that front, and want to thank +Avonelle Wing for raising this very real concern. Jul 26, 2016 Fraser Simons's profile photo Fraser Simons +10 I am a little amazed that people aren't extending the benefit of the doubt as to the overall intent of the post. I see no reason not to take the intent as written. Seems to me it reads an emotional post, referencing through his own lens what he considers to be wrong. If you yourself were making any kind of argument...do you not do the same thing? You reference what is through your own lens in order to covey what you intend to. It's also emotional, it's complex, it's messy, it's not perfect, it's how you feel.   I get that this is a public post and as such, it's meant to be commented on. That said, I'm disheartened to see that so many people read such a moving piece -- albeit with missteps he's already owned up to -- and are making it about themselves. I don't feel like the fact that what you took away from the post makes it OK to essentially attempt to invalidate the intent, feelings and opinions of the author. Again, let's try and look at the intent of the post instead of ripping apart the implementation as it pertains to ourselves.  This is what you are hearing, this is what you felt it conveyed to you let's not tell the author what the intent is and what they are saying. I think a lot of the concerns written here are not criticisms of the intent of the author, but are instead criticisms of the outcomes brought about by the post.  I think some of the intentions that are laid out here are laudable, and agree with them to some extent. At the same time, many people seem to think that the outcomes of both publishing the post, and also the proposed courses of action, might not have an effect that matches the intent of the author. Many of them men. And that's hard for me to square with my reaction to this post.  I cried when I read it, out of fear. Afterwards, I called my husband and left a tearful voicemail. Then I wrote some email and tried to pay attention in class, only I couldn't stop shivering (I wasn't cold) and my hands wouldn't stop (shaking), which made it hard to type.  Since reading the post, my chest feels tight and painful, my neck and shoulders feel tight enough to use for bridge cabling. I haven't been able to get a deep breath, and I know that when I go home I'm going to have to take an Ativan and lie down for a bit, which will be sticking my husband with the burden of childcare this evening. Again.  To be clear, all of this isn't because I'm crazy (although it is true that I am mentally ill). It's because I'm terrified. Terrified of how this is going to be used and what it means for me and people I love. Because I've seen all of this before and know that I will see it again.  It's easy to be brave when you're not the one bearing the consequences. Jul 26, 2016 Renee Knipe's profile photo Renee Knipe +45 This is going to sound snarky and shitty, but I actually mean it earnestly...  Exactly what are the values of the "storygamer" community and when/who established those? Are we supposed to be better than the OSR (a community I also feel a connection to)? Better than average humans? More able and willing to tuck our pain and anger away while someone else is standing on our neck?  I believe communities should police themselves internally. For example, I think Christians who get riled up and shout       #notallchristians      when trans or queer folks (like myself) broadly talk about the failings of Christianity towards LGBTQ people should shut the fuck up and look to their most visible public figures for change, since those are the people who screwed it up for all of them. Publicly identifying with a group means laboring under its reputation, especially if you're not willing to help fix it. But we have people in the storygames community who have done far worse than spout swear words at Zak (which, btw, the phrase "fuck a goat" was first seen by me on his blog referencing storygamers), and they've been shielded by folks whose names I can see right here.  Because not believing a victim is not enough. We then also expect conciliation to be their responsibility.  (To tie the two pieces of this comment together: What I'm saying is if we're going to talk about storygamer values and what those are, the people who have tried to assert them here don't resound to me as adequate moral authorities, because they've failed to adequately police the space previously. That doesn't stop anyone from having an opinion, or even make them wrong, but this conversation is inherently on shaky ground from the start.) Jul 26, 2016 Anna Kreider's profile photo Anna Kreider +20 +Avonelle Wing It would have been nice to have the context of the situation being called out acknowledged. Jul 26, 2016 Mikael Andersson's profile photo Mikael Andersson +18 Regarding all the sub-divisions and different personalities etc in the OSR: Both Z.S. and Pundit are prominent figures in a movement which many would refer to as "Old School Revolution". Both of them have combative relationships with what many would refer to as the "Story Gamer community".  In truth none of these movements and communities formally exist, anymore than GamerGate or Anonymous or Occupy or Liberalism does. There are no leaders and no membership cards, no central gathering places, no secret handshakes. Often the broadest notion of philosophical agreement that ostensibly tie these groups together are of secondary importance to the notion of community acceptance and identity.  So, sure, Pundit and Z.S. are two different people with different opinions on things. If you're an OSR insider I'm sure you'd be aware of all the drama and points of contention and philosophical deviations between them, just like I would look at the differences between a Vincent Baker and an Avery Alder design and not perceive them as operating even on the same radio spectrum, much less wavelength, despite their most well-known games sharing a system. From the outside, though, both look like "story games", despite both their games sharing more DNA with D&D than with Fiasco.  Point I'm trying to make it, for the purpose of this post it doesn't matter if Z.S. has formally denounced Pundit or if Pundit has disowned Z.S. or if one of them like their catacombs on blue grids and the other on black hexes or whatever, and it certainly doesn't matter "whose camp" you're in. Mark's post talks about how story gamers shit on OSR gamers, and to illustrate this he fallaciously gives us a whole bunch of examples of people who play story games reacting badly to them or their friends suffering online abuse from a single individual who happens to be a vocal OSR proponent. The post also gently rubs up against the idea that story gamers act elitists against OSR gamers when OSR gamers in fact come in every demographic, without recognizing that OSR communities taken as a whole are on average for whatever reason very male, very white, very straight, very cis, and much more rife with anti-progressive and abusive people than (all) other RPG subcultures, in my (considerable) real-world and online experience (I welcome other datapoints and should note that my real-world experience is localized).  It's unfortunate that all of this is being conflated in one unfortunate post, but that's just the unfortunate reality of what we're trying to sort through. (To take it in a direction where it gets teeth, consider that one of the major positive factors in women's mental health is the ease and availability of divorce.)  So I think the demographics of who's talking in this thread, who's supporting versus protesting the original post, etc. are important, yes?  I counted up the comments by gender (or at least, by assuming that traditionally masculine names/pictures with facial hair represented male commenters, double-checking G+ profiles to see whether a gender was identified, etc.) I apologize in advance if I have identified any female or nonbinary people as male.  I counted comments as "neutral" if they didn't take a stance on the piece either way or were responses to other comments that didn't touch on the piece itself.   So, here's some numbers.  Positive comments: 27 male; 1 female (96% male) Neutral comments: 7 male; 1 female (87% male) Negative comments: 10 male; 14 female (41% male) Dots: 14 male; 4 female (77% male)  So, women aren't talking much, here. But where they are, they're overwhelmingly speaking in protest about this post.   Given the number of women who have mentioned being frightened to comment, or who have mentioned others who are frightened to comment, you might want to think long and hard about the environment this is helping to create.  I agree that we should all strive for an end to hostility, but A) not at the price of telling people who have been harmed that they can't be angry or express anger, and B) not by conflating an end to hostility with forgiveness/reconciliation. Jul 26, 2016 Fraser Simons's profile photo Fraser Simons +4 I read a post steeped in complex emotions in questions that effect a large number of people. It sounded like someone was afraid to speak out before, it sounded like they loved the community despite it's flaws and called for us to be critical of ourselves and others when it comes to hate and hate speech. It really feels like it comes from a place of love.   Since it's a public, this was bound to happen. But now it just sounds like people are attempting to invalidate how someone else feels, because of missteps, because of the ramifications, etc. People are using it as a platform to springboard off of other topics and that's great, it's also being done in the comments of the author which, intentionally or not undermines the intent and goal of the post. As I largely disagree with many of those claims, it makes sense to me that you read my comment as dismissive of them. I'm positive Mark can handle my criticism, I'm not worried about that.  (I do super dig the idea in general that we ought to act responsibly and with dignity even in the face of abuse, because in many cases abusive people are stuck in a spiral of mutual abuse and getting out of that requires someone taking the first step. But in this particular case it's been attempted so many times that hearing this, at this time, from this person, is disturbing to me.)  I've said my piece, though, and will not comment further. Jul 26, 2016 Jeffry Crews's profile photo Jeffry Crews +21 I subbed but frankly don't feel comfortable with my all opinions being expressed in this thread due to a pattern of harassment I have observed. A lot of people I know are frustrated and scared. Most of them have very complex feelings about it. I think it was very unfair of Mark to bring several people into this public forum without asking them. I also think that we could have talked about bad behavior without singling out certain people and deciding to hurt their business publicly. I don't think throwing Robs name in adds anything useful to the discussion especially when we are discussing a private thread that has been long since deleted. Adding Zaks in a dozen times doesn't either. Breaking personal ties with Rob would have been ok. Privately pulling support for his project would have been fine, but publicly telling the world about it seems like an unnecessary attack and calculated to injure him. Screenshotting a post from a deleted thread it and sharing it seems like a terrible breach of privacy.  Jul 26, 2016 Juan Ochoa's profile photo Juan Ochoa +3 +Zzarchov Kowolski I'm not USian so I may be missing something, but I thought the context for defining "power" here was clearly limited to the gaming culture/industry? I'd like to live in a world where fewer laser cannons of rage were firing my way. I think that would make it easier to sort noise from signal. Jul 26, 2016 Fraser Simons's profile photo Fraser Simons +5 It's unfortunate that Mark writing such a personal piece, something that really does feel like it's from the heart, is targeted only for the missteps and not for any of the merit. I'm pretty confused as to what we are even discussing. It began with the overall intent and missteps, which have been acknowledged. And now is being used a personal platform to springboard off of.   I think that ramifications are very important, I think people are missing the point of the post. You're essentially using an emotional op-ed piece for your own purposes instead of seeing it for what it really is, refusal to remain silent.   It really, really, really sucks that the ramifications have hurt already victimized people. I wouldn't know how to weigh that against Mark articulating his thoughts his feelings. If he's willing to be critical of himself, and I believe he is, I believe he will be more aware now. I know I will be. My heart goes out to everybody. I hope people return to the original spirit of the text at some point, because I still do believe it comes from a place of love, even if it has caused hurt. There is merit there. I think a certain amount of empathy has to come into play for those responding though.  If the majority of people able to spot issues with something are those who have already been victimized, it seems unfair that they must not only point out the flaws, but also maintain a tone that helps reinforce the aspects they agree with as well. If someone is hurting, they very well may not have the energy/frame of mind to compliment the aspects that don't need to be changed in favor of those that do. Especially if the piece that they are discussing could very well be a catalyst that brings down more pain on them. There definitely is missing context here.  Part of it is that Mark is at least partially right: There have been bad actors in the story games community. People I most definitely would not want to associate myself with. Folks who engaged in underhanded harassment and smear campaigns of their own, not just against OSR people (and Zak specifically), but our own folks (people you and I know personally and love) who didn't come out strongly enough on what they considered their "side" when previous shitstorms happened. We're talking editing of posts, slander, doxxing, emailed threats, etc. It was bad enough that at one point I even felt obligated to make a public statement clarifying that in no way was I accusing Zak of transphobic behavior, nor was my dislike of him connected to other peoples' comments that suggested as much. Defending Zak was a helluva of a bitter pill to swallow considering the way he's always behaved towards me, but less bitter than letting myself be lumped in with people engaging in the very worst of behaviors.  Those people, however, are not in this thread. And while they're kind of referenced in Mark's post, they're not named in the same way Rob Bohl is. And while folks may find Rob's approach distasteful, it ultimately amounted to an internet shouting match with swear words, most of which were things cribbed directly from Zak's own playbook of year's past. It's an unfortunate exchange to build an entire indictment of the storygame community around, since there are actually better (but not recent) examples if one wanted to make that argument. What it ends up feeling like is a bomb dropped on a whole bunch of people who have been trying to keep their heads down right before a big con around which we already have a ton of anxiety. Why the finger-wagging moralizing now? Why say it's storygames vs. OSR when 90% of the discussion is about two individuals, one on each side of the equation? People are perplexed, baffled, and scared. Jul 26, 2016 Lizzie Stark's profile photo Lizzie Stark +20 OK. Something Acknowledging their pain and how the community needs to be better at not silencing them. Acknowledging that what we want is to be better than the people who are hurting them and why that matters. Acknowledging that sometime people need to get angry and express it might be good too.  This is a shitstorm because it was made personal and intended or not it asks many to ignore the pain that is inflicted on them by third parties and that's not really fair either.  Jul 26, 2016 Crystal Frasier's profile photo Crystal Frasier +25 I'm seconding everyone here who say's they're terrified of posting, but I think it's important to add another voice to the obvious: Posting this isn't insightful and it isn't brave. People have been telling abuse victims--especially women--to just be quiet and forgive their abusers for a very long time. You're comparing one person--completely out of the original context where Z.S. stormed in as usual to poke and prod and provoke--and then using that to say all the people he's ever abused and organized hate campaigns around should just let bygones be bygones and trust he'll never do it again.  That's pretty appalling. Jul 26, 2016 Jessica Price's profile photo Jessica Price +39 +Marcus Burggraf Thanks for asking! :-) The biggest thing for me is men asking more questions and doing less jumping in with their opinions. Part of making a community welcoming is just giving us space to talk. (A recent study showed men thought women had dominated the conversation if men talked less than 75% of the time. So it takes conscious work on men's parts to back off and give us space to be heard.)   The other one is helping remind other men to do the same. I'm not just talking about harassment. I'm talking about things like, "hey, how about we let her finish what she was saying?" or pointing out when someone's being gaslighted or forced to jump through hoops just to get to their main point. Or pointing out when someone starts explaining to us when we didn't ask for an explanation. Or pointing out statements/generalizations about women that are being treated as prescriptive rather than descriptive. Men listen to other men on these things. (I'm actually on a panel at Gen Con about how we can never get to the 200-level topics in women and gaming--intersectionality, representation vs. normalization, etc.--because we're forced to keep going over the 101-level topics: yes, sexism is real. Yes, it's bad. Yes, it actually does happen pretty much everywhere.)  Harassment/abuse grabs all the headlines because if it bleeds, it leads. But the things that create environments where it's the norm, where we already start at a disadvantage, are much more subtle and usually aren't malicious. They're just ingrained in us by what our culture teaches us is normal.   Most of this, I think, holds true for any marginalized group, not just women, although the specifics of how it plays out differ. But so many can't, and shouldn't have to, and we need a better way to manage pain and fear than be told to play nice and hope it goes away. I think we should be working hard to promote and support and HIRE creators from marginalised groups and I am doing my damndest to be part of making that happen. I commend the sentiment and the speaking up about it. I think the idea of building bridges between communities is a noble one (though you can't demand people be friends, they have to like each other). I follow people in the OSR community and the indie community (more the latter, admittedly) and I have friends in real life from both sides. I am in favour of civility online.  But I am damned if I will accept "this post isn't about Zak" when it works so hard to make it about Zak and people he has victimised. I do not understand what the need was for call-outs. From the list of call-outs, those which I know the least thing about include good people trying to do good things, or people who, if uncivil, were responding to the shitty behaviour of others. None of them were ever "burn the OSR to the ground and feast upon the bones of their children". They have already taken unpleasant social consequences for their actions, they are themselves victims of harassment, and I think it is a fucking shame this post chose to make it worse for them.  I hope we can all act on the bits we agree with but please don't ask people to shut up about the shitty bits. That is not cool. Jul 26, 2016 Jessica Price's profile photo Jessica Price +35 +Fraser Simons I've yet to meet a feminist who isn't tired. I don't have easy answers. I don't even have answers in most cases (like how to handle Zak's perpetual disagreements with our community).   But I'd like to find ways to talk about those problems, and I think that means stepping back and owning our part of the conflict. We (story gamers) have to do better, and we've got to step up to the plate and live our values. Those things don't involved ignoring Zak's behavior or silencing anyone who has been traumatized. In fact, I think we're going to need our values to figure out how to move forward through this difficult conflict.  I'm asking for peace. No peace was ever truly won through war. Instead, it's won through a peace process in which both sides try to find some common ground.   On that note, I'm closing comments here (mostly because I can't spend all day moderating). I felt some fatigue and was only motivated to attend because my brother and 13-year-old nephew, both of whom I adore, were coming. So I heaved a weary Gen Con sigh and signed up. But as it turns out this was probably my favorite time attending! The vibe was so positive and there was so much love and fun happening among my growing circle of friends. Everyone was generous and kind and I had the best time. My nephew exploded in a frenetic ball of awesome and did not rest for four days straight, doing and playing every last thing. At one point he stepped up at Games on Demand and ran three back-to-back Fiasco sessions. We had to drag him away and force him to eat.  Games on Demand was in a beautiful new space with more room and less noise. The new procedures, although not perfect, were a huge, huge improvement. I informally rate convention games on an academic scale and I didn't have a game worse than, say, a B- this year, with plenty of As and a couple memorable A+ games in the mix. I attribute this to a combination of the better space, the better system, and GoD's natural filter (You have to want to be there, you have to love the kind of game I love to run) providing excellent players as a general rule.   I ran a lot of games, all in two hour increments. I ran five sessions of The Warren and two sessions of Night Witches, as well as a run of The Climb and another of JUGGERNAUT.   My favorite moment in a Warren game was when the woman - herself pregnant - playing a doe gave birth and then matter-of-factly selected the two weakest among her newborn kittens to feed to a pair of predators as a distraction, saving the lives of the rest. Not a kid's game. So many wonderful moments, though. The Warren completely rocks. I can't wait to get it out in the world in a "published by Bully Pulpit Games" edition.  My favorite Night Witches moment came from a snap decision to break up a four hour slot into two shorter slots - two players elected to stay, so midway through there was a change of command staff within the section. +Angela DeLong - Andersson showed up for slot two as the hard-as-nails Polya, determined to whip the sad sack girls of 2-squadron A-section into shape. She sort of did, before everything went predictably to hell. Protip: Mission pool saves lives, ladies.  Both live action runs were very strong, and The Climb had a majority of first-time larpers who crushed it. One came back for more, to both JUGGERNAUT and +Andrew Medeiros' run of The Tribunal! I was really happy to see that.  Off the books I got to try out Silver and White, War of Ashes and +Karen Twelves Olive-Garden-themed Apocalypse World hack.  My larp Villa Air Bel got a run thanks to +James Stuart, and four brave souls including +Stras Acimovic, +Kira Magrann and +Ron Edwards tried out my locked room puzzle game (58:03, just OK but not stellar, team!)  I played Hope Inhumanity with +Patrick Riegert and liked it so much I came back and played it again, dragging my brother along. This is a really clever game that functions as a hard decision generator surrounded by a wisp of apocalyptic fiction. I really enjoyed it and finagled a deck to bring home. It's constantly about hacking the experience. Especially since we run and attend so many other events.   I'm really glad we came this year.
